3. Technical Requirements

The LNG project demanded strict adherence to international engineering standards and industry best practices due to the hazardous nature of LNG handling and the critical safety requirements of marine energy facilities. The key technical requirements included:

  • Cryogenic Service Capability: All wetted components and valves were required to maintain structural integrity and sealing performance at LNG temperatures (approximately -162°C).

  • Low Temperature Material Compatibility: All materials were selected to prevent brittle fracture and ensure mechanical integrity under cryogenic service conditions.

  • Hazardous Area Compliance: Installation in classified areas required equipment with appropriate Ex certification for potentially explosive atmospheres.

  • Marine Environment Corrosion Resistance: Equipment must withstand high humidity, salt spray, and corrosive marine atmospheric conditions, necessitating stainless steel and coated housings.

  • Leakage Integrity: Strict fugitive emission requirements for all valves to ensure zero leakage and environmental compliance.

  • Reliability & Long-term Stability: Measurement and control equipment were required to maintain accuracy and repeatability over extended service intervals with minimal maintenance.

  • Control System Compatibility: All field instruments were supplied with standard output signals and communication protocols required by the client's control systems.

4. Engineering Solution

Our engineering approach was based on the client's P&IDs, instrument datasheets and I/O requirements. Beyond material supply, our engineering team provided comprehensive technical support throughout the project lifecycle:

  • Cryogenic Application Selection: We selected pressure transmitters and temperature sensors with appropriate wetted materials and process connections specifically designed for LNG cryogenic service, ensuring accurate measurement and long-term reliability at extreme low temperatures.

  • Valve Sizing & Actuator Selection: Control valves were sized based on actual process conditions (pressure, temperature, flow rates, and media characteristics) provided by the EPC team. Actuators were selected with appropriate fail-safe positions as per the client's safety philosophy.

  • Cryogenic Valve Engineering: For ball and gate valves installed in cryogenic zones, we ensured extended bonnet designs and proper material selection (austenitic stainless steels) to maintain stem seal integrity and prevent ice formation.

  • Material Traceability: All valve bodies and instrument wetted parts were supplied with full material test certificates (MTCs), ensuring complete traceability from mill to installation.

5. Key Challenges & Solutions

Challenge 1: Cryogenic Operating Conditions
The LNG facility required equipment capable of continuous operation at cryogenic temperatures (-162°C), where standard instrumentation and valve designs are prone to material embrittlement, seal failure, and measurement inaccuracies.

Solution: All instruments and valves destined for cryogenic service were selected with materials specifically rated for LNG temperatures (including 316/316L stainless steel bodies and internals). Valves were provided with extended bonnet designs to maintain packing temperature above the frost line, ensuring reliable stem sealing and leak-free operation.

Challenge 2: Rigorous Quality Assurance & Inspection Requirements
Duta Marine and its appointed third-party inspection agencies required stringent Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and on-site verification to ensure that every delivered item met specifications without exception.

Solution: Prior to shipment, we conducted comprehensive FAT protocols on all instruments and valves, including pressure testing, leakage testing, calibration verification, and functional testing of actuators and positioners. All test reports were compiled and submitted with the final documentation package. Upon arrival in Malaysia, all delivered materials met the project inspection requirements and were accepted for installation.

Challenge 3: Tight Delivery Schedule
The LNG project operated on a strict construction timeline, with any material delivery delays potentially impacting downstream installation and commissioning activities.

Solution: We implemented a phased delivery plan aligned with Duta Marine's construction schedule. Dedicated production slots were allocated to ensure timely manufacturing, and logistics were coordinated to ensure just-in-time arrival at the Malaysia site. All deliveries were completed on schedule, enabling uninterrupted installation and commissioning.

6. Project Execution

Execution was driven by strict adherence to the EPC master timeline and Duta Marine's quality requirements. Anhui Tiankang Group, together with Anhui Hongji Instrument & Valve Co., Ltd., established a dedicated project management team to handle order processing, manufacturing, quality control, and logistics.

  • Phased Delivery: Materials were dispatched in batches corresponding to the installation schedule, ensuring that on-site inventory was managed efficiently without congestion or storage delays.

  • Documentation & Compliance: Every shipment was accompanied by comprehensive technical documentation, including material test certificates (MTCs), calibration reports, FAT reports, pressure test certificates, Ex certificates (where applicable), and installation manuals.

  • Third-Party Inspection: Equipment was verified by third-party inspection agencies appointed by Duta Marine upon arrival in Malaysia. All items met the inspection criteria and were accepted for installation, demonstrating the consistency and reliability of our quality control processes.

  • Installation Support: Our project team remained available for technical consultation during installation, ensuring that any on-site questions were resolved promptly.
