The Thanlyin Oil Refinery Project is a national-level key project led by Myanmar's Ministry of Energy, located in Thanlyin Township, Yangon Region. The project aims to upgrade and modernize the No. 1 Oil Refinery (Thanlyin) to address Myanmar's growing fuel consumption and reduce dependence on imported petroleum products.
The project is being implemented in two phases:
Phase 1: 500,000 tons/year crude oil processing capacity (expected operation: 2026)
Phase 2: Expansion to 3,000,000 tons/year crude oil processing capacity (planned for 2028)
The refinery will utilize crude oil from the Myanmar-China crude oil pipeline. Upon completion of Phase 2, the facility is expected to meet approximately 50% of Myanmar's domestic fuel demand.
Phase 1 construction includes an Atmospheric Distillation Unit (ADU) with 500,000 tons/year capacity, a jet fuel hydrotreating unit (JET-A1) with 150,000 tons/year capacity, and a hydrogen production unit rated at 400 Nm³/h. The project adopts advanced DCS, SIS, GDS and AMS control systems.
In January 2026, Myanmar's Union Minister for Energy inspected the construction site to review progress and equipment installation status.
Project Significance: This project represents a critical step in Myanmar's energy independence strategy. Once Phase 2 is complete, it will significantly reduce the country's reliance on imported petroleum products and contribute to domestic energy security.

Bimetallic thermometers and integrated temperature transmitters were selected to cover the full range of process temperature monitoring requirements across the ADU, jet fuel hydrotreating, and hydrogen production units. Thermowells were supplied with 316SS solid-drilled tapered designs and SH/T 3406 flanged connections to withstand refinery service conditions including high temperature, pressure, and corrosive hydrocarbon environments. IEC-compliant thermocouple assemblies provided reliable temperature measurement for critical process control.
